The uniform
Along with the change of the name from "Christian Mission" to "The Salvation Army" a structural change with corresponding military ranks was introduced in 1878. As part of these changes, military clothing began to be worn in 1880.

In the beginning wearing a brooch, an “S” or an appropriate badge was an important identification sign. In old photos from this time sometimes Salvationists are seen wearing a pullover with the embroidered crest or the name of The Salvation Army as they were often not wealthy.
